ASCE7-10 References in the 2012 IBC and 2012 IRC

So it turns out the reference to the latest edition of ASCE 7 – the 2010 edition – in the 2012 I-codes is NOT going to be simply an update to an existing standard.

ASCE 7-10 replaces the one wind speed map previously provided – which was intended for allowable stress design – with 3 wind speed maps that are intended for strength design.

Although ASCE 7-10 does not refer to ultimate strength design for wind loads, the 2012 IBC refers to the wind speeds given in ASCE 7-10 as ultimate design wind speeds.

And the 2012 IRC will have one design wind speed map that is not the same as any of the other four discussed above.

It will definitely take the fenestration industry some time to figure this all out. And even more time to figure out what it all means for our industry.
